ELM Enterprise Manager 8.0 supports the in-place upgrade from ELM Enterprise Manager 7.5. This process preserves the current settings and configurations however will require the creation a new set of databases.

The first step in the process is to update the installed version of ELM to its terminal build if necessary. These final releases include all the fixes and enhancements accumulated over the version life cycle. In addition, these are the only fully supported upgrade paths to ELM 7.5.

Products Affected
ELM Enterprise Manager 7.5

Special Notes and Requirements:

  • Windows Server 2016 or Later
  • Window 10 or Later
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or later, Enterprise, Standard, and Express
  • .NET Framework 4.6 is installed during setup if not present
  • 64-bit architecture
  • *New Primary and Failover databases required; created during install.
  • Archive Database:  If you are using an archive database you will need to manually create a new database after the install is complete.

ELM 8.0 is unable to receive legacy events from older agents or forwarded events from legacy ELM servers.  You have an option to enable legacy support from ELM servers, however agents are not supported.

The installer will update the ELM Server to .NET Framework 4.6.  Any agent servers older than Windows 2016 will need to have .NET 4.6 manually installed before that agent can be updated or deployed.  .NET 4.6 is available through Windows updates on Server 2016 or greater.

Prerequisites

  1. Confirm the ELM Enterprise Manager 7.5 license is under an active Support and Maintenance Agreement. To check, go to the ELM Server Properties-Licensing tab in the ELM MMC Console. The Expiration Date is listed. If it has expired, it will appear in red.
    • To verify the expiration date is current, use the Edit/Activate button and Activate the Serial Number. This will update the Expiration Date.
    • To purchase an upgrade or renew the Support and Maintenance Agreement, contact Sales
  2. Confirm the current installation is running either ELM Enterprise Manager 7.5.166. The build number is available in the About ELM Enterprise Manager… under Help on the MMC toolbar. If a previous version is installed, Contact Product Support for access to the terminal build installation package. Download and save the file on the ELM Server system.
  3. Download the current version of ELM Enterprise Manager 8.0. The .exe installation package is available after a short registration on our Product Downloads page. Save it on the ELM Server system.  Please note you have two download options.  One contains a version of SQL Express, the other will download a copy of SQL Express during the installation process if a supported SQL Server is not specified on the install page.
  4. If you activate ELM using a key file (vs web activation) contact Fire Mountain Sales or Support for an upgraded license key.  The upgraded license key file needs to be available in the current 7.5 install directory (Typically Program Files x86) before you run the upgrade to 8.0 so the installer can find it.

Procedure

Update (if required) the installed version of ELM to the terminal build of 7.5 mentioned above.

  1. Create a backup copy of the ELM 7.5 Directory (highly recommended). It is located at \Program Files (x86)\ELM Enterprise Manager
  2. Run the ELM80 installation package as an Administrator. The Wizard will start up and identify the installed components. Add the Service Logon Password and agree to the ELM Enterprise Manager license terms. This screen also provides you a place to specify the SQL server to be used for the new 8.0 databases.  If you do not specify the SQL server or if the SQL server is not supported ELM will automatically install a supported version of SQL Express.
  3. Click the Upgrade button. This will upgrade all the ELM components running on the server and all deployed agents.  Please note by default ELM 8.0 does not support receiving agent data or forwarded events from prior versions of ELM.
  4. In limited cases, a server Restart may be required. It is only necessary if a specific operating system or database updates were installed. Use the Restart button on the last page of the Wizard.
  5. On the final Install Successful page of the Wizard, confirm the ELM Management Console is selected. It will automatically open when the Finish button is clicked.
  6. Enjoy ELM 8.0!
